What is acupuncture?
The practice of acupuncture dates back thousands of years, originating in China. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM,) acupuncture is a therapeutic process that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate and balance the flow of energy, known as “qi” (pronounced “chee”) along pathways called meridians. According to the tenets of TCM, imbalances or blockages in the flow of qi can lead to various health issues and ailments.
Today, acupuncture is used to treat a variety of conditions, including chronic pain and pain management, stress relief, digestive problems, respiratory disorders, and mental health conditions and concerns. Many patients find acupuncture to be a safe, effective modality of both medical treatment and self-care.
What can I expect from an acupuncture treatment session?
The highly skilled and registered acupuncture specialists at 360 Chiropractic offer a variety of acupuncture treatments that can be fine-tuned to the individual needs and preferences of our patients. Stimulation of “acupoints” can be accomplished by needles, physical pressure or even laser technology; each delivery method is equally effective, comfortable and soothing to the body and mind.
In a traditional acupuncture treatment session, your acupuncturist will carefully insert thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body’s surface. The choice of points and their combination depends on your health concerns, conditions and needs as well as your acupuncturist’s professional assessment.
Once the needles are inserted, they may be gently manipulated by the practitioner to enhance the therapeutic effect. Some patients report a small degree of pain or discomfort during their acupuncture treatment, but many experience little to no pain or discomfort whatsoever. The needles are removed after a short period of time, typically no more than 10-30 minutes, and patients are able to immediately return to their normal day-to-day activities with no downtime.
